![]() ![]() That said, the further we got from Kurt’s death, the more bands you could find mining Nirvana’s molten soul rather than merely aping their vital statistics. It was a sort of musical inbreeding programme resulting in a whole slew of tattooed, short-trousered yokels, a gob-smacking number of whom lucked into platinum discs. Any major band spawns tadpoles of course, but post-grunge acts like Silverchair and Stone Temple Pilots and Fred Durst’s cabal of dullards and the Green Day/Blink 182 pension plan punks were the bottom of the barrel, mainly because they were copping off bands who themselves were revisionaries. ![]() So, American hard rock in the ’90s was distinguished, if that’s the word, by depressingly generic recycling enterprises. “I was getting tapes from bands that didn’t sound remotely like the Pumpkins or Nirvana, and (record companies) thought that I could somehow transform their artist into that sound,” remembers producer Butch Vig. Post Nevermind, the trio became one of the most cloned acts of the era, but the second X-generational acts who sounded most like them were least capable of tapping into their primal, Stooge-like thrust. The band had no real successors, mainly because their music was made luminous by the kind of spirit that doesn’t show up on a Xerox machine. It happened to Nirvana, in one of those once-a-decade package deals. As Dave Grohl pointed out in these pages a few weeks ago, it could’ve happened to anyone: Hüsker Dü, Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies.īut it didn’t. Granted, Nirvana themselves were not the most original band in the world so much as a meld of vintage UK punk 45s, ’80s straight-edge, itchy ’n’ scratchy Amerindie acts and melanchoholics like The Replacements. To hear Kurt Cobain singing ‘You Know You’re Right’ on radio or MTV this winter was to witness Banquo’s ghost showing up at the Headbanger’s Ball looking for his voice back from the likes of Nickleback and Puddle Of Mudd and The Vines.

![]() Use the tip of your brush to “stipple” some textured areas throughout the snow area. Add a little extra blue towards the bottom of the landscape and blend it up. This will allow the snow to look like it has different shadowy areas throughout the landscape. The snow is a combination of pure white and some light blue (use phthalo blue). Add different amounts of white and light blue to your brush as you paint the land. Paint long wavy and thick strokes with the light blue. Then add a small amount of phthalo blue to the white. Paint an uneven, slightly wavy land area that goes slightly above the horizon line. Then start painting the rest of the snow on the left and right of the path. These strokes are thick and not watered down. This will represent the snow buildup on each side of the path. Then paint thick, textured & rounded strokes on the edges of the path. Paint the outline of the path to define the shape. Wait until your path dries (or use a hair dryer to dry it quickly). It is okay if you go outside the lines of the path. Paint the left and right, thin strokes all throughout the path using a variety of the colors that blend gently together. There are streaks of darker blue, lighter blue and some streaks of the “light blue violet”. Use your 3/4″ flat wash brush to paint thin, left and right strokes in the path area. Mix some titanium white into the phthalo blue. Add water to your 3/4″ flat wash brush and slightly water the phthalo blue down to a thin consistency (but not dripping). It is okay if you see the brush strokes! A lot of this sky will be disguised with trees & falling snow. ![]() If needed, add more light blue violet to your brush and blend it into the sky. Paint the ultramarine blue on the edges of the canvas and blend it into the light blue violet. Then add “ultramarine blue” to your brush without rinsing it. Blend the colors so the sky gets gradually darker. Keep painting in textured “x strokes” with the white and light blue violet. Basically the sky will be brightest and lightest in the middle area above the path and gradually get darker as you approach the edges of the canvas. Then gradually add more light blue violet as you work your way outwards. Paint a “blob area” with textured strokes. Start in the bottom middle of the sky just above the horizon line and end of path. Mix about 5 parts white and 1 part light blue violet (the lighter blue color). Then load your palette with: ultramarine blue, titanium white and light blue violet. It curves slightly and goes very wide at the bottom. The path meets in the middle of the horizon line but does not go to a point (it ends flat). Use a ruler to draw a horizontal line down the middle. The process is said to take only 2 to 8 seconds from the time of inhalation. Nicotine readily crosses the blood-brain barrier which then promptly diffuses into the brain tissue. Inhaled nicotine escapes the first pass intestinal and liver metabolism. When tobacco smoke is inhaled, nicotine rapidly enters the bloodstream through the pulmonary circulation.
